INTRODUCTION

In order for a creation to be possible, there must first be a contraction,
a concentration of all energies at a center.
Then, an expansion must occur; the gathered energies must be sent forth
in a concentrated form as a ray or beam of energy.

The Kabbalah

Technically, light is a wave moving through a medium. It is unlike any wave with which most of us are familiar. Its complexity is enough to severely challenge the ability of an author to explain it. Once you have read this little book, please digest it for a time, and then read it again. You will find that each new reading provides new insights.

Light is a phenomenon that is based upon simple principles but which has eluded simple analysis for centuries. It conceals the true nature of the universe while showing us its works of art; some so small that a microscope is needed for us to see them, and others so large that we are within them. It is a work of magic, giving us the rainbow which recedes when we try to reach its end.

We know that light is a mere octave within many octaves of electromagnetic radiation. Our sight is limited to this octave, probably because evolution saw fit to save us from the confusion of too many visible octaves. However, this limitation also creates mysteries by shielding us from the octaves to which most objects are transparent.

Visible light is different for different creatures, the wavelengths shifted slightly for their receptors. And because light, to us, is the representative of electromagnetic radiation, we often call other forms of electromagnetic radiation "light." However, the principles of light-energy apply to all forms of this phenomenon.

Because light allows us to see what is before us, because it helps us to avoid stumbling, because it shows us what distant objects are (within our own limited frames of reference), it is the symbol for intellectual and "spiritual" illumination. In ancient times, and even today, the giver of light and energy is a holy object, the "face of the Creator" and sometimes the Creator himself.

According to the lore of many cultures, we are the children of the sun. In fact, Carl Sagan has said that this is literally true because our bodies are made of elements created within the heart of suns, sheltered upon a world created of the same elements, sustained by food created by the sun's energy, and guided by minds to which solar light has added many layers of experience.

The sun is a body which uses the energy of gravity to create light and heat. Even the nuclear processes within the heart of the sun and the resulting transmutation of elements are gravity induced. So light may be considered either the result of or an aspect of gravity.

Regarding the quote at the beginning, the Kabbalah is a body of knowledge that comes to us from ancient Judea. However, its source is much older than Judea and its words are in a language that is difficult to translate in English or in any other modern language. Some of the concepts in one of its words can require anything from a paragraph to a whole course of study before the reader can comprehend its meaning.

This particular quote may be referring to the contraction of stellar gases. First, the gases fall inward, concentrating, their inertia and mutual gravity to create heat, igniting transmutational processes. Next, the gases expand from the energy and light moves outward as beams of energy. The creation of a sun has occurred.

And with the same pertinence as the quote at the beginning, we have a quote for the end of this message. When reading it, think of the sun as the "Creative" with its light and heat, and think of Earth as the "Receptive" with its various forms of life, all dependent upon the sun for their activities.

The Receptive is all-potential, but inert.
The Creative is pure energy, limitless and tireless, but incapable of doing anything
except radiate off into space if left to its own devices.
But when the Creative acts upon the receptive, its energy is gathered up and set to work.
When the Receptive receives the impulse of the Creative,
all her latent capacities are energized.
